Winter Holiday Activities and Food Programme 2021
From 20 December to 23 December 2021, the Council has teamed up with a number of schools and community services to offer a range of food support and activities as part of the government-funded Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. The scheme is free for those in receipt of free school meals, with some venues also offering paid-for schemes for pupils not on free school meals.
There will be food provision (meals provided), sports activities, arts and drama, mentoring, healthy eating and nutrition tutorials set out across various locations in the borough.
Footballer Marcus Rashford, who is helping to promote the HAF programme with a short film, says:
“I know only too well that the holidays can be a really difficult time for families who are struggling.
“It’s such a weight off their shoulders to know that there is a safe space for their children to go, where their minds can be stimulated, and where they are guaranteed at least one meal a day.”
Anna Taylor, CEO of the Food Foundation, adds:
“The pandemic has hit the most vulnerable and disadvantaged the hardest, with food poverty at the heart of the difficulties for many families.
“It’s absolutely crucial that we are supporting our young people so that they can overcome these challenges and thrive.”
Food provision and activities are inclusive of all children and young people, including those who may have a disability or who have Special Educational Needs. However, some activities may not be suitable for some children. Please discuss any dietary restrictions and needs before booking.
Young Hackney hubs and adventure playgrounds will be providing food support and activities as part of the HAF programme. Please check our festive opening times and contact centres directly to check availability before attending.
