Chlamydia

Chlamydia is probably the most common STI out there. It’s a bacterial infection, and the bacteria usually spread through sex or contact with infected genital fluids, so either semen or vaginal fluid.

In the UK, one in nine women aged 16 to 24 are infected with chlamydia. However, many of them won’t know that because there are often no symptoms. If symptoms do occur, however, they usually come between one and three weeks after the infection, usually a clear discharge.

If somebody’s having sexual contact for the first time, and the condom breaks or they don’t use a condom, you should not go to the clinic the next day because an infection won’t show up. The recommendation is to go to the clinic after a week unless you get any symptoms.

Chlamydia is very easily treated with azithromycin or doxycycline. The dose is just two tablets, and you should avoid sex for a week after this.
